Between 1660 and 1700, over 500 plays were written in England, more than half of them comedies. But not all of them are available in modern printed editions, and only a selected few are currently being edited. The rest are neglected and rarely read. Since 1995 a team of university scholars have been working in a project which aims at providing the means for a better knowledge of the plays -particularly the comedies- of the Restoration period. The team started with professors Juan A. Prieto-Pablos, Rafael Portillo, Maria José Mora and Manuel J. Gómez-Lara, all in the Department of English Literature at the University of Seville (Spain); in the second part of the project, other professors have joined in, both from Seville (Juan Carlos Hidalgo, Mercedes Salvador) and Cádiz (Rafael Vélez).

The Restoration Comedy Project has two main research goals, namely, the elaboration of a catalogue of all the comedies written during the Restoration and the critical edition of significant comedies of that period.
